LivingRoom 2009 - Mid-Century Atomic remodel Scrapbook

Amazingly, 6 years have passed since our last remodel of the living room. This time we went all-out for a 50's era Mid-Century modern/Atomic age makeover. We included a mixture of vintage elements with new to create a vintage feeling. We think that we succeeded.

Entertainment Center

We have greatly reduced the complexity of our entertainment center. A TV, PS3, pair of speakers, and a Zune dock comprise our complete media setup.

View from the Coffee Bar

Vintage wall-art, lamps, and endtables really provide a sense of authenticity. We removed the aluminum tubular legs of the coffee table (which were more 80's inspired) and replaced them with basic tapered wooden legs with brass feet. They were stained with Danish oil. The result: a table that looks authentically from the 50's.

Wall-art closeup

We found this authentic vintage wall-art set at the Antique Trove in Scottsdale. The timing was perfect as the seller had taken them from their display and set them aside to take home since nobody was interested in them (up to that point in time). We grabbed them for a decent price. Considering how difficult it is to find vintage wall-art, we are absolutely delighted with this find.

Entertainment center swap

By moving the entertainment center to the opposing wall, we effectively gained over 4 feet of total space in the living room. It is even more spacious than it was after the kitchen renno.

Vintage lamps and tables

Here are a set of wonderful vintage 50's lamps. The endtables were found on ebay.

Close-up of photos

These are photographs of special places in our old neighborhood in Bensonhurst Brooklyn. They really capture the flavor of the old neighborhood. We can almost smell the fresh-baked pizza, Nathan's hotdogs, hot jumbo pretzels kept warm over charcoal, and briney ocean water.
